A modification of the tank Ausf. F appeared as a result of studying the combat experience of Pz. Kpfw. IV in Poland and France. In these battles it was convincingly proved that shielding the armored hull with additional armor, which was used on previous modifications of this tank, was irrational and could be considered only as a temporary solution. In this model instead of using hinged armor the thickness of the hull frontal upper plate, turret frontal plate and gun casing was increased to 50 mm, and the thickness of the hull sides as well as the sides and rear of the turret was increased to 30 mm.
