What is 3D modeling and who is it for?

Computer 3D modeling is the creation of three-dimensional objects: characters, interiors, architecture, landscapes, environments and other graphics. To create a 3D model, designers use a variety of programs that help bring the most unusual fantastic ideas.

With the help of 3D Max, Maya, Blender, AutoCAD you can design any object and make it move, using animation technology.

But the modeling process itself is about creating the framework of the model - connecting points, curves, and polygons into a whole.

What do 3D modelers do?

The task of a 3D artist is to visualize and animate the three-dimensional model in digital space. A modeler creates characters and environments for the video and film industry, computer games and mobile applications.

Modelists work both individually and in teams with programmers, animators, 2D-artists, art directors. At the same time it is not enough to "mould" a three-dimensional model in a 3D program, it is necessary to follow the general design concept, as well as the style of the video or game. Even the simplest project requires three-dimensional graphics artists to do their best, while the object itself can change many times during the work.

Where to learn 3D modeling?

Working with 3D models requires not only good imagination, creativity, and creative approach to the work, but also maximum concentration, patience, attention to detail. And if you need to work with a team, you will need skills in communication and work within strict timeframes, because, for example, the video game industry does not tolerate failed deadlines.

Especially difficult to master the 3D-modeling to those who are not able to work quickly in multitasking mode, do not know the basics of computer literacy.

But if you are not afraid of high requirements for the modeler and you are an experienced PC user, you can learn modeling in college, university or on specialized courses. Many professionals are taught modeling on their own by books, tutorials and videos from the Internet. Here the choice is only yours.

But to succeed in the profession, you should choose a serious institution or courses, and better combine classroom training with self-study and build up a portfolio.

Where 3D modeling is used

There are a lot of areas where modeling is used:

Architecture.

Interior design.

Automotive industry.

Medicine.

Seismological research.

Astrophysics and astronomy.

Computer games.

Mobile applications.

Film industry, videos, commercials, and other industries.

Jobs and salaries

Even at the beginning of the 3D-modeler, who has not yet had time to take part in the grand projects, there are all chances for a decent income. For example, the average salary of a beginner game designer starts from $400-500. Salary level will depend on the region, company and experience.

Some Russian firms are ready to start paying 3D-modellers from $1100 per month. Specialists with experience can earn over $2000 per month.

Interior visualizers receive from $1000 per month. If a specialists work only for themselves, then only for one project, they can ask for more than $1300.

If you decide to engage in 3D graphic design in the U.S., you can count on an average salary, which will be at least 6000 dollars per month with tax deducted.

You can work both in the office and remotely. And the number of job offers is increasing every month due to the high demand for professionals. Depending on the profile, you can get a job as a 3D character modeler, 3D designer, environment designer, animator. Specialized education will be a big advantage when applying for a job. But if you don't have one, having a strong portfolio is enough.
